Tiny Dinos
Tiny Dinos
Let me take you on a journey here, because “Tiny Dinos”, the fourth and final instalment of the Meet My Muses collection, is one that gets me good.
When I began my birdwatching journey in 2020, the one bird I desperately wanted to see in person and photograph was North America’s largest woodpecker—the Pileated. I had only ever seen one back in 2019 from a ways away, and the only way I could describe it was that it was basically a pterodactyl. I was mesmerized and I didn’t even fully grasp what I was looking at. Fast forward to 2020 and it was my GOAL to track one of these babies down. I tried for months, spent my summer seeking out Pileated hotspots, sitting, waiting, listening for their drilling or calls—no luck. I always seemed to miss them. Until one day, November 11, 2020, I was drinking coffee in my living room, staring out the front window as I always do, and BAM. A huge shadow swoops through the trees and there she was. A female Pileated Woodpecker, 15, 16 inches long at my feeder. She was HUGE. I cried as she posed so sweetly for my photos. Then BAM. Another shadow. Her male partner arrived. Queue a steady stream of waterworks, folks. It was a life-changing moment for me to witness these two in my yard, chatting, feeding and relaxing. They stayed for no more than ten minutes, but damn, what a ten minutes they were.
Choosing to paint these guys was a no-brainer, and I decided to make them the final piece of this collection to end it with a BAM.
